In fact the S&P retail index (^RLX - news) has seen more than a 30 percent gain since January, significantly more than its broader counterpart, the S&P 500 index (^SPX - news), which has seen a more modest 11 percent rise. ''The outlook is good because retailers aren't going to be affected by the Asian flu,'' said Marcia Aaron, a retail analyst with BT Alex. Brown in San Francisco. ''Most of their operations are in the U.S. and as long as we don't see a significant correction we will continue to see the consumer active in the marketplace,'' she added. Aaron also pointed to the fact that Asia's financial woes may even moderately ease costs for U.S. retailers as they search for bargains on textiles. Specialty retailers like bebe, Gap Inc (GPS - news) and Pacific Sunwear of California (PSUN - news) recorded an 11.2 rise in same-store growth for May, an indicator that people are putting their money where their mouth is. ''We've seen some pretty robust results over the last couple of months, but to have May be double-digit really reflects true demand,'' Aaron said.<<
