Compaq bets on Net

Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) hopes to make $1 billion a year in
fees from Internet service providers and online services. As part
of its fall product roll-out, Compaq is expected to show Presario
Internet PCs, which include built-in Internet function keys, and
to announce agreements with America Online Inc. (AOL) and GTE
Corp. (GTE) under which it will receive fees based on how much
Presario owners use those services, The Wall Street Journal
reported. "We've focused on placing connectivity front and
center," Compaq consumer division chief Rod Schrock said. "That's
going to drive sales now." Details of the Net promotion include
plans to rebate $100 to Presario buyers who sign up for trial
subscriptions with the online services. Major retailers including
Best Buy Co. (BBY) and Office Depot Inc. (ODP) will participate in
the sales promotion.

Net's news use triples

An estimated 36 million people now get some news from the Internet
in a typical week, compared to 11 million who did so two years
ago, according to the Pew Research Center for the people and the
Press. News users on the Net are also younger, better educated and
more affluent than the population as a whole, the report showed.
Putting the finding in context, the research concluded almost as
many people use the Internet for news on a typical day as do those
who read magazines. More information about the survey can be found
at www.people-press.org.
