The Forbe's piece is certainly negative: Some of these competitors are setting up collaborations with big drug companies, in which they can collect royalties on new drugs invented with their molecular machine tools. So far Affymetrix has no such deals. Many of its customers are university research labs, which haven't got the deep pockets that would be needed to turn Zaffaroni's latest creation into a blockbuster like his first two.
