The Darker Side on "street beaters", internet stocks and 'high growth' stocks.. I heard something interesting this afternoon. Someone was cautioning investors not to pounce on some stocks just because they beat the street by 1 cent or 2. He said that it is very important to see where their earnings are coming from. Are they coming from non-operating income (i.e. AOL, YHOO, MSPG) or does the earnings growth stem from a strong core business, or is this just a small start-up company. The best way to judge if you want to enter a stock AFTER a good report is wait and read the quarterly reports. Don't get caught up in the momentary euphoria from a 'street beater. Of course if you are a trader, you're probably out after a short hold.

NTAP after an upgrade to long term accumulate and SBH, LOR look good. Those of you holding MSPG, I'd think of profit taking as its retreating after a nice open. As I suspected, WDC's warning hit the market hard. Today I'll be concentrating on story stocks, upgrades, and the earnings plays.

The earnings warnings are expected and actually what it does for us is ferret out the companies that will be removed from our database, thereby saving us some losses. In about a week, these warnings will be over and we can then find those companies (across all sectors) that are projected to have strong earnings acceleration this quarter.
