Yes, I think late 1999 is a better estimate of when NT 5.0 sales will really pick up. Enterprises need time to evaluate, then plan for a complete hardware/software upgrade plan.

Anyway, I don't think NT 5.0 will be that great of a driver of demand. I think it is more sensible to expect strong, steady demand from BackOffice. NT 5.0 is sort of like NT 4.0 with Directory Server. BackOffice is the story for Microsoft servers.

This is also relevant because BacKOffice and Alpha could be great for each other. BackOffice isn't as slim as it could be, so it benefits from having a lot of CPU/RAM/Disk capacity, which is the domain of DEC servers. Let's try and stuff as many Alpha BackOffice-tuned machines into the channel between now and 2000 as possible, Compaq!
