Be still, my beating heart...... an HG column without the obligatory IOM cheap shot at the end:

Speaking of which: On Monday Hambrecht & Quist analyst Todd Baker injected new life into Iomega's stock (and added around $300 million to its market value) when he whispered that the company was likely to be mentioned later this week in conjunction with Compaq Computer (CPQ:NYSE). The thought was that Iomega had finally won a big contract from Compaq. Yesterday Iomega did get an order from Compaq to install Zip drives as standard features in most of its new Presario PCs. But Syquest (SYQT:Nasdaq) stole Iomega's thunder by announcing it had won a three-year contract from Compaq to install its SparQ drive in Compaq's built-to-order PCs -- the ones it'll use to compete against Dell (DELL:Nasdaq). The duration of Iomega's contract isn't known, which must be why investors knocked $131 million off its market cap yesterday.

But just for perspective: Yesterday Iomega's market cap stood at around $1.7 billion; Syquest's, $121 million.

>>ZIP standard in every Compaq Presario,<<

A misstatment of fact right off the bat, I see. Zip is to be only available in the 7 most expensive out of 13 Presario models. I guess 7 out of 13 does happen to be a majority, but cannot be considered a "Standard", especially when it RELACES NOTHING. It can easily be dropped off of the package list simply by unchecking the box and saving an extra $100 or so off the purchase of a new Presario.

>>The ZIP and JAZ are both considered standards in the music industry and no other removeable media has been included in such devices, than those made by IOMEGA.<<

Wrong. Simply, and absolutely, Wrong.

Roland, possibly the largest maker of electronic musical equipment in the world, officially endorses the use of Syquest Syjet. Roland used to supply Jaz drives, but dropped them due to unreliability. This situation is well-known. The Roland mailing list I subscribe to is replete with horror stories of musicians losing complete album's worth of songs due to Iomega's Jaz. As a result, almost everyone there uses and recommends Syjet as a removable hard drive.

Also, the Sony Minidisc is Standard equipment in Tascam multitrack digital recorders. These recorders record data directly to a built-in Sony Data Minidisc. They are very popular and relatively inexpensive little systems.

And PC Cards are still found on a majority of Keyboards and rack units, due to their ruggedness and small size.

The standard floppy drive comes installed in the majority of Samplers.

The Akai Sampler line has models that feature a Sony MO drive.

In fact, seeing an Iomega drive installed in anything is a very uncommon thing in the music industry.

So, you are either ignorant about the music industry's use of removable media, or are lying.

Which is it?
