Interesting story on web advertising:

<<The concept of conducting business on the Web is attracting a lot of
media hype as a means for becoming wealthy and successful. As intriguing
as the concept may be, many new Web-based businesses quickly find that
selling a product or service is almost an impossible task. After
investing hundreds, if not thousands, of hours and dollars in setting up
a new Web site, and listing their site on every available advertising
directory and search engine most businesses are lucky to receive a few
orders per month. Many new Web-based businesses find the Internet a very
cold place to do business.
If you take a close look at what is currently happening on the Web you
find drastic differences in the popularity between sites. Only the top
0.1% of Web sites can generate sufficient revenues from advertising on
the Internet. Businesses quickly learn that promoting one's business on
the Web is not like the more traditional forms of "customer-oriented"
media, where your message is likely to pass by your audience and
hopefully get noticed. This is because the Web is a user-driven
experience. The user is actively engaged in determining where to go
next. The user is usually on the Web for a purpose and is not likely to
be distracted from their goal by an advertisement. This active user
engagement makes the Web more cognitive, since the user has to think
about what hypertext links to click and how to navigate.

Most businesses fail to realize that the Web is not simply a
customer-oriented medium; it's a customer-dominated medium. Web
advertising should be valued in terms of the amount of business it
creates from the new users it attracts to your site. This value is
typically very small for the masses who have add their URL to hundreds
of search engines and directories, a simple click-through (clicking all
the way through a site) for a general listing is usually in the 1%
range, meaning that 99% of the people seeing an ad don't even bother
clicking on it. To avoid the same mistakes that 99.9% of Web advertisers
make you must be willing to take three steps to ensure success. >>
