Re: Asia Warnings

This one was one of my "networking" stocks.

Belden Announces Asia Looking Weaker Than Expected
ST. LOUIS, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Belden Inc. BWC announced today that they are experiencing declines in export business to the Asia/Pacific region in excess of original expectations. Because of the weak economic conditions in this region of the world, the Company is currently expecting revenue declines from Asia/Pacific in the second quarter of approximately $5 million compared with the prior year. This decline which is a combination of declining price and demand will likely result in pre tax earnings being $2.5 million to $3.0 million below earlier expectations for the second quarter of 1998.

The Company further indicated that the remainder of its business is currently performing in line with expectations. In spite of the weakness in Asia/Pacific, the Company currently expects to report second quarter revenues and earnings in excess of prior year. If economic conditions in the Asia/Pacific region do not improve from current levels, the Company expects a similar impact on revenues in the third and fourth quarters. However, Belden is taking steps to reduce costs in this region of the world to reflect the decline in activity.

<<Herb on TheStreet
By Herb Greenberg
6/10/98 Weak-kneed Wednesday: Can't wait to see: The spin HMT Technology (one of this column's old -- ahem -- friends) puts on its outlook now that Western Digital, one of its largest customers, prereleased a lousy quarter>>

FWIW Greenberg has been an HMT basher for many many months and has been proved FOS time and time again. I am not a fan of HMT or any DD component manufacturer right now but Greenberg has been hollering "sky is falling" on HMT long enough that he may finally see it come true. HMT will undoubtedly be affected by the DD sector downturn, the stalwart last to do so by the way. And Greenberg will undoubtedly strut around and say I told you so. He is a third rate stock analyst with an extreme sense of self. Also I might mention that HMT's exposure on WDC is primarily on the high end Enterprise Group stuff which WDC stated is showing continued profitability. HMT may not be as badly affected by their troubles as RDRT is/was. Also: WDC may be in technical default on their loans but most bank lines have coddigles about sustained profitability. It doesn't mean that WDC is near bankruptcy or anything like it. Though I am near term bearish on the DD sector I think WDC has potential for significant appreciation. Patience and market timing can reward here. All JMHO.

Best,
Stitch
