Clark, I would say (in line with yesterday's post) that the bellweather indicator right now is the level of the Nikkei 225. The reason is that Japanese equities form a large part of the value of assets for Japanese banks. As the Nikkei falls, the value of assets for the banks falls, and they slip deeper into insolvency. The other key indicator might be a new round of speculative attacks on SE Asian currencies, which will hasten their devaluation. As indicated yesterday, that translates immediately into increased inflation, but more importantly, it will mean increased numbers of bankruptcies, which will further weaken the Japenese banks. The falling regional currencies will also make China's position vis-a-vis the Yuan more precarious daily.
