New York Times to Open Web Site to Compete With Microsoft, AOL

New York, June 10 (Bloomberg) -- New York Times Co. will
open an online guide to New York City that will compete with
Microsoft Corp.'s Sidewalk.com and America Online Inc.'s Digital
City sites, as the publisher of one of the most widely circulated
newspapers seeks to boost its Internet presence.

The site, called New York Today, will be free to users and
will make money by selling advertising, especially to local
businesses, a New York Today spokesman said.

Online travel guides are some of the most popular sites on
the Internet, with about 2.9 million people visiting America
Online's Digital City sites in March, according to AOL. New York
Times declined to specify when it will unveil its own site or
give details about its content.

New York Times already posts its newspaper on the Internet
for free, though it charges users for some services such as the
crossword puzzle.
