Still thinking about that 3COM/LU ADSL spec. Telechoice posted this last week...

... Westell looks to be caught betwixed and between. They are partnered with DSC to provide an integrated, CAP-based ADSL solution for Bell Atlantic's deployment yet have an agreement with Lucent to integrate certain intellectual properties into their C.O.-based switching platforms. Bell Atlantic has indicated privately that it is strongly considering moving to DMT later in 1998. As DMT standards are ratified towards the end of this year, the existing Bell Atlantic contract may change as Alcatel now obtains DSC's initial relationships with the East Coast regional carrier. Westell reportedly has recently offered Bell Atlantic DMT solutions for deployment in line with its recent RFP for next generation access equipment... .

Westell is going to provide a solution on the 5ESS, but they don't get their names on the ADSL spec. I've seen Westell's name on the CISCO, Nortel, Alcatel spec, and we know they aren't working with those companies. Why leave Westell's name off??..... until later.

Comments...

PS. I can't believe they left Westell's name off that ADSL spec!!!

>>but their name isn't part of the LU/3COM ADSL draft spec

Bill; This is confusing to me also. I've always been curious as to what Westell actually brought to the table with Lucent. I also noticed the passage you posted from telechoice mentioning "intellectual properties" but I did a search of the patent database some time ago and didn't find any Westell patents relating to ADSL. It does appear Westell has IP that Lucent needs though as they're still working together, at least on the DLC SLC products. It would be nice to see Westells name in a pr about the 5ESS, I haven't seen them mentioned in the same sentence in a while...

>>3COM has used TI for most of their chips, but switched to the ADI solution for ADSL... look for them to switch back<<

I wonder if they'll end up with Alcatel chipsets

[3Com and Alcatel Commit to Interoperable ADSL Solutions; Joint Efforts to Speed Market Adoption of ADSL]

"-April 29, 1998--3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) and Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) today announced they have signed an agreement that will result in interoperable ADSL products and services"

>>My gut feel, 3COM will purchase Westell

I thought of this when I saw the DSLAM pr. 3COM's Viper line is CAP, and I remember thinking how 3COM could come in buy Westell, have a CAP/DMT DSLAM, access to the Bell Atlantic contract, etc. I also remember seeing their name mentioned in the NIH interoperability pr. If they were working on CAP interoperability that would be a clue. I soured on the idea when I saw 3COM's end to end ADSL pr from a day or 2 ago, my thinking at the time was why would they need Westell, they can do everything in house. On the other hand Trey made a good point, consolidation is all about elimination and reduction of duplication, that's where the savings are. Who knows, I hope you're right. Might be the best way to maximize shareholder value at this point. I'm beginning to agree with the poster Archer who mentioned the company should be shopped around. I think the clock is ticking and Westells expertise will become less and less valuable as everyone else develops end to end solutions. If they wait the only reason to purchase them would be for contracts, and they don't seem to be winning the big ones... at least yet.
