Alex: Despite your protestations, I still contend that the Easter Islanders would now be controlling the world (from their spaceport base in Lima) if they had had a different philosophy! See earlier posts on how they probably did it in an alternate universe. As for mining, etc. the best bet would be to move most of it off earth and do it in space. One of the first companies that plans asteroid mining of carbonaceous asteroids just went public a few months ago. Father Terrence
