Techie, your wrong on both counts. You seem to be laboring under the illusion that there is some sort of law of averages. I will disabuse you of that notion. There isn't any law of averages. Just because Compaq's business plan has been inferior to Dell's doesn't imply that it will get better to compensate for past short comings. It could deteriorate further if they don't get their act together.

The gross margins of each company could deteriorate, and sales growth could even turn negative. So to state that Compaq has nothing to lose is just plain wrong. It has everything to lose, just as Dell has.
