I'm curious about relationships among these funds and the Market Manipulators...er Makers. Does anyone know of any? Or will they jerk the funds around as much as any other buyer?

It's more likely to be the other way around. The MM's get in and get the stocks, then sell them to the funds at reasonable prices in an effort to serve the fund well. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some type of standing deal whereby the MM's give the funds a "standard" price + fees no matter what the stock trades at, again in the best interest of the fund, which will bring them back next time they need another "added" stock...
