Maverick, many of the problems may be due to poor quality assurance/control in the manufacturing process. The technology in the lab may work and sound in theory. But poor quality is what can kill a good idea. This is where ISO 9000 comes into play. OE management knows this, that is why Siemens is part of OE's business plan because it has a high quality record. There was a magazine article published several months ago (See my web site)on how OMC manufactured its outboards. The writer reported that OMC had a 40% failure rate in manufacturing its injectors. They also manufacture the control unit. They are a one shop manufacturer. What I've learned over the years, being proficient in all aspects of the business is an impossibility. The important focus for OE is to get the system out on the market and assure that the highest quality is built in. Go back to your boss and make sure he implements every aspect of ISO quality standards. The results will impact the bottom line.
