>>I have never heard of an Englishman with a self-deprecating sense of humor....<< Well you may be right--though when I lived there, the English seemed inclined to make fun of themselves as group -- in the context of comedies, TV, etc. I recall an English friend once saying to me that during WW II, the Germans would try to demoralize the British troops with spoofs about the British and the English, in particular--and the suggestion was that far from demoralizing them, it had the effect of cheering them up. Well that was the spin--whether true or not! Anyway, the market seems headed down and I feel good about life, all of a sudden:)
