Samsung Electronics Develops Technology
For 4-Gigabit DRAMs
TOKYO (Nikkei)-Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea has become
the first company in the world to develop the technology for etching 0.13
micron-wide circuits on chips, company officials announced Wednesday.
The technology is considered crucial to manufacturing highly integrated
semiconductors such as 4-gigabit dynamic random-access memory chips.

It has long been believed that manufacturing highly integrated chips would
require investment in expensive new machinery such as X-ray steppers
and electronic beam aligners.

But the South Korean chipmaker said an improvement made on its
krypton fluoride excimer laser for 64M DRAMs will allow existing
devices to be used for making 4-gigabit DRAMs. It aims to design a
prototype of the chip within three years without making any fresh capital
investment.
