Kirk, I'm worried about US banks getting involved too heavily
and spreading the contagion to the US, rather than improving
Japan. Like the rotten apple...

This comes from an excellent article in this month's Atlantic, which very much stressed the cultural aspect of the Japanese economy. Japan is neither capitalist nor socialist, the article claims, as much as, well, tribal. The Japanese system, like that of the Soviets, has fallen victim to the superior Western economic paradigm.
