NEC Sets Minimum Price for 16Mb DRAM

NEC <TOKYO:6701> has set a minimum sales price for 16Mb DRAM. The
current international price for it is about US$3 (420 yen),
1/50th its price five years ago. The price is thus below the
manufacturing cost. NEC, say company officials, saw no point in
sales of the product at a loss and thus instituted the new
pricing system. NEC now plans to focus on 64Mb DRAM. Through
sales of 64Mb DRAM, NEC expects improved profit, thanks partly to
an anticipated 50% reduction in production costs for the product
beginning this fall.
