Yahoo! most popular Web site in May - report

NEW YORK, June 10 (Reuters) - Yahoo! Inc.'s (YHOO - news) Internet site, the consistent pacesetter for Web traffic, drew in 36 percent more Web surfers in May than its nearest competitor, according to an industry report released Monday.

Some 30.6 million individuals traveled last month to yahoo.com, where they accessed Yahoo!'s services, which include news, Internet search, and e-mail, Internet research firm RelevantKnowledge Inc. said.

The company, in its report, ''Top 25 Dot.com Domains,'' said it measures ''unique visitors,'' or individuals who may travel to a site by surveying a panel of users over age 12.

Sites operated by online giant America Online Inc. (AOL - news) were the second most trafficked, with 22.8 million unique visitors, followed by software company Netscape Communications Corp. (NSCP - news), with 18.8 million individuals.

RelevantKnowledge admits that due to technical reasons its report under-represents traffic on aol.com.

All of the top 10 sites are so-called ''portals,'' or a first stop where Web users can begin their Internet journey.

The company said that about 57 million people in the United States used the Web in May. Overall Web duration and frequency fell slightly in May, with the average Web user spending 9.1 days and 7.6 hours on the Web during the month, compared with 9.4 days and 7.9 hours in April.

Yahoo! has topped Web traffic list in every month in 1998.

Yahoo!'s system of sites, which includes multiple domains that fall under the Yahoo! brand on the Internet, was also the most popular in February, the study said.
