another win ho-hum esignory Selects Bay Networks Accelar Routing Switches for Robust New Network Backbone; Gigabit Ethernet Off-Loads Gigabit-Sized File Transfers SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 1998--Bay Networks, Inc. today announced that The Designory, inc., the largest independent integrated design firm in the United States, is using Bay Networks' Accelar 1200 routing switches to increase the capacity of its network backbone to 1000Mbps. The Designory is often referenced as the gold standard of automotive collateral design firms, as evidenced by its award-winning work for an impressive array of clients that include Isuzu, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile and Porsche. The company's design engineers typically work with graphics files that range from 200MB to over 1GB, and needed a network to support the continuous transfer and access of these large files. The Designory has initially installed three Accelar 1200 routing switches along with BayStack 350 10/100 autosense switches and an ARN router with BaySecure Firewall 1. All of The Designory's digital artists and designers (about 75 employees) have switched full-duplex 100Mbps Ethernet connections to each desktop. The Accelar 1200 routing switches provide full-duplex 1000Mbps connectivity for the network backbone. IP traffic is routed by the Accelar routing switches, which speeds up network performance since traffic no longer has to go through the standard router. "Working with graphics files that are sometimes over 1GB, we needed a network solution that would provide us with a huge increase in bandwidth and speed," said Gian Zoppo, IS director, The Designory, inc. "The combination of Accelar routing switches and BayStack 10/100 Ethernet switches provides us with full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet as well as switched Fast Ethernet to the desktop, at a price that we could easily manage," added Zoppo. "The Designory is at the cutting edge in terms of technology, and the bandwidth and performance demands of its network are significant," said Dave Shrigley, executive vice president of marketing, sales and service, Bay Networks. "We worked closely with The Designory's network team to ensure they would have a solution which would increase the productivity of their design and engineering teams while giving the network room to grow as their business grows." The Designory has plans to install additional Accelar routing switches as its network grows. This includes plans for Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to each desktop in the company's Digital Imaging Group, where the majority of large files reside.
