EMC More Than Doubles Performance of Cross-Platform Information Sharing Software

Enhanced Software Dramatically Improves Access to Strategic Business Information

HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 15, 1998-- EMC Corporation, the world's leading supplier of enterprise storage
solutions, today announced the enhancement of its industry-leading EMC InfoMover information sharing software, allowing
customers to break down the barriers between different computing platforms and better utilize vital corporate information across
the enterprise. EMC announced it has more than doubled InfoMover (formerly Symmetrix Multihost Transfer Facility) file transfer
performance and added Fibre Channel and UltraSCSI connectivity to increase file transfer speed, decrease cost of ownership and
extend the distance over which customers can share files across the enterprise.

InfoMover allows organizations to perform high-speed bulk file transfers between any combination of supported mainframes and
open systems servers. File transfer occurs through high-speed channel connections to a Symmetrix Enterprise Storage system,
rather than over slower network connections. This significantly improves bulk file transfer speed and frees network bandwidth
for other business-critical activities.

In addition to the connectivity and software enhancements announced today, InfoMover management and flexibility have been
further augmented by the following:

InfoMover Management Utility -- Eases the setup and management of InfoMover environments.
European Character Support -- InfoMover translation tables ensure that file transfers are received accurately and in the
needed format.

''At First Union, our leadership position is closely tied to our ability to utilize and exploit information pulled from sources across
the organization,'' said George Mattingly, Senior Vice President for Capacity Planning at First Union. ''We rely on EMC InfoMover
to perform daily data transfers between our mainframe and open systems environments. The transfers are performed quickly and
efficiently through a Symmetrix Enterprise storage system rather than over the network. This ensures that our data warehouses
remain fresh and contain relevant, current information. The increased InfoMover performance, connectivity and management
features announced today further differentiates this EMC solution from anything else out there.''

According to the recently released information management survey conducted for EMC by New York-based research firm
Find/SVP, 84% of IS executives reported that they have been asked to close the information gap by providing information to those
who need it, when they need it, regardless of what platform on which that information was created. In order to make that
information accessible to users, 92% of the survey respondents are moving information between or among disparate systems in
their data centers.

''Once again EMC is making the promise of enterprise-wide information sharing a reality,'' said Robert Dutkowsky, EMC's
Executive Vice President, Markets and Channels. ''Through standard connectivity options and enhanced software functionality,
EMC InfoMover allows customers to quickly and efficiently transfer files between disparate computing platforms resulting in
faster data warehouse loading, increased operational efficiency, and improved decision support.''

At PC Expo '98 Box Hill Demonstrates Storage Area Network (SAN) Technology Using the Fibre Box*

PR Newswire - June 15, 1998 08:55

Fibre Box(R) and SAN Allow for Improved Productivity In Business-critical Applications

NEW YORK, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- At this year's PC Expo, Box Hill Systems Corp. (NYSE: BXH) will demonstrate the advantages of the Storage Area Network (SAN) when using Box Hill's Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) RAID storage system, the Fibre Box(R). The Fibre Box(R) and the SAN provide improved fault-tolerance, flexibility and performance for data-intensive, business- critical applications. Box Hill, based in New York's Silicon Alley, is a leading worldwide supplier of high-speed enterprise storage and backup solutions.

"Until now, customers had to choose between the flexibility and fault- tolerance of distributed file systems like NFS and the higher performance of traditional channels like SCSI," said Ben Monderer, Box Hill's Chief Technology Officer. "A Fibre Channel SAN, using Box Hill's Fibre Box(R) offers superior performance, flexibility, and fault-tolerance. Nothing is compromised. The bottom line is better productivity and less downtime for business-critical applications."

About Box Hill's Fibre Box(R)

The Fibre Box(R) is a high-performance dual FC-AL controller-less RAID storage system with an unprecedented level of throughput accelerating any application requiring fast storage I/O. A mirrored Fibre Box(R) based solution eliminates the need for expensive external Fibre Channel RAID controllers. The result is a high performance, cost-effective RAID solution with increased uptime. The Fibre Box(R) also enables data transfer rates of up to 200 MB/s, transmission distances up to 10 km, up to 126 host/device connections and capacities of up to 2.27 TB. In the SAN environment, the Fibre Box(R) is managed by SANman(TM), Box Hill's SAN management software product suite.

About The SAN

The SAN is a Fibre Channel-based high-speed network that supports transfer speeds of up to 200 MB/s and cable lengths up to 10 km. The SAN provides multiple paths from the host/server to external storage systems, allowing information to be shared among various devices without affecting system performance or the Local Area Network (LAN). A SAN may be as simple as a dual arbitrated loop with up to 126 host/device connections, or scaled up to a fabric of switches with virtually unlimited nodes. In addition, by combining the best attributes of fast I/O channels and distributed file systems, the SAN provides improved fault-tolerance, flexibility, performance and system maintenance. The results are increased availability and greater productivity. The SAN is ideal for business-critical, data-intensive applications, such as data warehousing, Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), multimedia Internet/intranet Web servers, imaging, and video production.

Box Hill Systems Corp. (NYSE: BXH) is the leading, full-service provider of high-availability, enterprise storage and backup solutions that are bigger, faster and smarter than industry competition. Box Hill, based in New York's Silicon Alley, is recognized worldwide by a customer base that includes many of the largest financial, telecommunications, digital imaging, multimedia, pharmaceutical, government and university research institutions in the world. Gadzoox Networks Announces Six-Port Gibraltar GL Fibre Channel Hub That Delivers Enterprise Reliability and Functionality to the Growing Mid-Range Server Market

Business Wire - June 15, 1998 09:27

SAN JOSE, Calif--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 15, 1998--

Company Targets New Hub to Growing Demand from Mid-Range Windows NT and UNIX Server Customers for SAN (Storage Area Network) Solutions

Gadzoox(TM) Networks, Inc., the industry leader in Gigabit-speed Fibre Channel SAN products, today announced the Gibraltar(TM) GL, a modular Fibre Channel hub offering six Gigabit-speed, fully managed ports.

The Gibraltar GL hub is the ideal solution for the mid-range server customer whose applications require the same reliability, availability and performance as the high end enterprise customer, but whose system needs are typically for lower storage capacity with fewer ports at a lower entry price. The Gibraltar GL hub is available now and is priced starting at $3,995, unpopulated. Ports may be populated with any mix of copper and optical Gigabit Interface Converters (GBIC). Copper GBIC's are available at $60 per port and short-wave optical at $250 per port.

The Gibraltar GL hub features PerfectPort(TM), a capability unique to the Gadzoox Networks Gibraltar family. PerfectPort assures the industry's highest levels of data reliability and integrity through the use of a per-port retiming circuitry embedded in the Gadzoox-developed ASIC design. The Gibraltar GL is managed by Ventana(TM), the industry's first SAN management application. The Ventana management architecture spans Gadzoox' full line of managed Fibre Channel hubs and switches. It provides unsurpassed visibility into the SAN, significantly increasing network reliability. The Gibraltar GL hub also provides flexibility as a customer's SAN configuration grows by enabling hubs to be cascaded with additional Gibraltar GL six-port hubs or with 12-port Gibraltar GS hubs. All Gibraltar hubs comply with industry standards so they can be cascaded with other vendors' Fibre Channel products.

"The initial SAN market has been driven by large, enterprise customers buying primarily from high-end UNIX and Windows NT server vendors," said David Tang, vice president of marketing at Gadzoox Networks. "Over the past two years, Gadzoox has developed strong relationships with the majority of these vendors and has shipped them the industry's greatest number of managed hub ports. From this strong base of product acceptance, Gadzoox is introducing the Gibraltar GL, designed specifically for the more price sensitive mid-range UNIX and NT server user. These customers demand the same functionality as the high-end users and they are poised for dramatic growth. They are also more likely to buy through traditional distribution channels. The Gibraltar GL is positioned with the pricing and configuration options that give our channel partners the optimal solution for selling into this exploding market."

"Dataquest believes that the majority of Microsoft Windows NT-based server sites will only require a six port hub solution. Smaller configuration hubs will allow many users to buy only what they need and eliminate the cost associated with components that will never be used," said Thomas Lahive, senior analyst of GartnerGroup's Dataquest.

"Gadzoox has done an outstanding job of developing products like the Gibraltar GS 12-port managed hub and the Denali Fibre Channel area switch that allow high-end customers to implement the foundation for growing their SAN infrastructure," said Brad Morris, DOD account manager for Technautics, a Virginia-based systems integrator that develops advanced technology solutions for Federal customers. "We have found that many of our customers are migrating to NT and the Gibraltar GL hub opens up this market segment for us. We now have a compelling solution for our mid-range customers to implement a Fibre Channel SAN and enjoy faster, more reliable and more easily scaleable networking for their data-intensive applications."

Gadzoox Networks, Inc. is the industry leader in Gigabit-speed Fibre Channel SAN products. The company brings innovative networking solutions to storage by delivering a highly scaleable, managed server-storage infrastructure that fully supports the SAN architecture. Gadzoox' product strategy fully supports the SAN architecture with modular, scaleable products. Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., Gadzoox is privately held.
