Another slant: SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, U.S.A., 1998 JUN 10 (NB) -- By Martyn Williams, Newsbytes. Amazon.com Inc. [NASDAQ:AMZN] which has used the Internet to propel it from a start-up book seller to one of America's leading book retailers takes its first steps beyond the world of books on Thursday as it launches a new online music store. Promising discounts of up to 40 percent off CD prices, the new service is likely to make a large impact thanks to its size and brand name but will face stiff competition from already established retailers, like CD Now and Music Boulevard. Unlike its book service, which launched with almost no competition, the online CD marketplace is already packed with competition. Amazon.com said its new Web site will have four main areas. The "Browse Styles" section will offer genre-specific music in 14 main categories, complete with reviews, editors' picks, articles, interviews, bestsellers, and lists of recommended essential titles. The "Chart Toppers" section will include the most popular and current music, all offered at a 30 percent discount. The area will also feature the Billboard Top 30 and CMJ college radio chart and national music charts from the U.K., Germany, Japan, and Brazil. In its "In The Media" section, the site will feature CDs recently featured in 20 leading media outlets, including Rolling Stone, Spin, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, The Tonight Show, and the Late Show with David Letterman. Finally, the "Recommendation Center" offers a computerized recommendation service that is based on the user's own preferences and favorite artists. Amazon.com is online at amazon.com .
