I believe (could be wrong though) that the alternative was BNS. However, they had other business interests. To be fair to this chap, there were other folks of significant intellect and muchos business experiences involved in the demise of WWW.

David,

Check out IStar's stock price when he was leading the organization.... went straight south until the company had to be sold to PINet. I don't know the man personally, however, I was a member of a large bbs when it was bought over by IStar. As members, we were poorly treated, and the total culture and all of the discussion groups were ignored by IStar. It was simply a case of buying over the membership base while ignoring the community and the culture that existed before. As a result, we found IStar to be simply an empty ISP shell, so most of us moved to other ISPs.

As the leader of the organization, he should be held accountable for members defecting IStar and eventually causing the demise of IStar. I think his vision was to convert IStar to business users only. If so, why pay the big dollars to buy the BBSes members? The demise of IStar is clearly the result of poor strategy and poor treatment of the memberships.

A picture is worth a 1000 words... check out the IStar chart.

>>"Craig brings the ideal skill-set to our company," said Mr. Osten. "His dynamic leadership style, exceptional senior management background and strong business experience will be a tremendous asset to the PC DOCS Group."<<

This statement is a paradox when you compare the results he obtained when he was the leader of IStar!!! The saving grace is probably he is now only in charge of a new division and not the whole company. Corporate management... don't they look at past performance and speak with a straight tongue!!
