More: 3Com Enters CLEC Marketplace
Newsbytes - June 11, 1998 12:14

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, U.S.A., 1998 JUN 11 (NB) -- Seeking to reinforce
its position in the telecommunications carrier market, 3Com [NASDAQ:COMS]
has taken the wraps off its first multiservice offerings for the
competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) marketplace.

Unveiling the six new multiservice access systems at the Supercomm '98
event in Atlanta this week, 3Com officials said that the systems are
based on the firm's Total Control platform, and mark the beginning of
a major move into the CLEC marketplace by the firm.

Initially, 3Com's CLEC market launch includes four entry-level product
bundles that it says provide CLECs with an easy way to expand into new
geographical markets. The 48-port and 96-port bundles are designed for
rapid deployment in small suburban areas, says the company, while the
192-port bundle is designed to support fast-growing deployments, and
the 288-port bundle is designed to support larger deployments.

Plans call for 3Com to ship two other higher end bundles later this
year, which have been designed to support rapid growth in even larger
deployments, with the first essentially doubling capacity to 576 ports.
And at the top end, the company plans to offer a 672-port system with
a built-in high bandwidth aggregation link.

According to 3Com, all the multi service access CLEC systems are designed
to support voice over IP (VoIP) with a suite of advanced IP (Internet
Protocol) telephony features.

Irfin Ali, 3Com's vice president for worldwide marketing, said that the
company is well positioned to leverage its position in the intelligent
network marketplace and into what he says is a "dynamic CLEC industry."

Ali said 3Com believes that the CLECs will benefit from 3Com's
established reputation for carrier class products. "As the Internet
access platform of choice for major NSPs (network service providers),
the Total Control platform already supports an overwhelming majority
of the North American Internet access traffic," he said.

"With so many new companies entering the CLEC service market, the
strength of the 3Com brand and product reputation can help our CLEC
customers break ahead of the crowd," he said.

3Com is already planning on its second phase launch into the CLEC
marketplace for later this year, Newsbytes notes. The firm says that
its second phase will center around products that combine multi service
ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) based systems for dial and dedicated
data access with powerful routing capabilities.

3Com's Web site is at 3com.com .

Scrapps,

I seriously doubt they would do that...they've always
coordinated their plans pretty well.
