Peter, definition of maggot: vermin who generally feed on dead or dying carcasses, usually attracted by smell. Not well liked, but perform a necessary service.

And you didn't mention how uplifting it is to have a civil, open-minded, and exemplary mature fellow like Nick about to grace these boards with thoughtfully uplifting commentary, just like a grownup.
