Re: Asia Warnings

Gee...I look away for a minute and they keep popping up. This one is very straight forward. No hedging their statements. Just telling it like it is. Refreshing.

I'm going out to dinner now. I'm afraid to look to see how many more pop up when I get back. This is not looking good.

MEMC Electronic sees Q2 loss wider than Q1
ST. PETERS, Mo., June 11 (Reuters) - MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. said Thursday that it expects to report a significantly greater loss in the second quarter of 1998 than the first quarter, when it lost $0.72 per diluted share. The company said in a statement that second quarter net sales will be about $195 million to $200 million, compared with $235.2 million in the first quarter.

A First Call report Thursday had an analysts' consensus for a second quarter loss of $0.64 a share. MEMC also said that about 600 hourly and salaried employees, or 13 percent of its U.S. workforce, have elected to participate in its voluntary separation program.

"The cost to implement this program is anticipated to be approximately $23 million to $25 million, of which $8 million was recognized in the 1998 first quarter and the remainder will be recognized in the second quarter," the statement said.
The company said continued weakness in the Asia Pacific and Japanese economies, declining prices for commodity semiconductors and inventory correctionsthe personal computer market are reducing customers' sales and visibility. MEMC will report second quarter results on July 27. The company produces silicon wafers.
