Sony Unveils Portable DVD Player... Found this dated March 16, 1998 but couldn't rememeber a posting. Sony uses LSI, right? ----------------- Flat-faced TVs weren't the only surprises among Sony's new product plans for 1998. Mike Fidler, Sony DVD marketing VP, unveiled his company's first portable DVD player (PVD-V30 "DVD Discman") which is slated to reach the market later in the year. The player is billed as "the world's smallest and lightest DVD video player." Unannounced was the display the player will use to present images. It offered no built-in LCD screen, and Fidler could not say if it would be bundled with Sony's Glasstron headset viewer. He said details will be announced later. It is slated to ship later in the year. In stating that Sony anticipates that the rental market for open DVD titles will quickly accelerate, Fidler said Sony does not anticipate much early success for Divx pay-per-play units that will be marketed by competitors. "If any new digital format is to be successful it must deliver two fundamental requirements: First, it must provide superior audio and video performance compared to what is currently on the market. Second, it must be able to establish a new business model accepted not only by content providers, but by manufacturers, retailers, and most importantly, by consumers," Fidler stated. Sony, he added, "believes that the current DVD format already meets these criteria. It already offers the highest quality audio and video technically possible, and this can be experienced in any room in the home or anywhere on the go." The current standard, said Fidler, offers consumers "the convenience and flexibility they currently enjoy when purchasing or renting other types of packaged media."twice.com
