Problem is, the economies of scale work against the local retailer. One facet of the business: most reputable dealers try to match the 3 year and 5 year warranties set forth by juggernauts like CPQ and Dell. While CPQ may be able to offer this warranty with little cost to itself, a small retailer is at a disadvantage since most pcboards, cards, and parts are only under warranty for a limited time from a distributor such as Merisel or Ingram. It sure isn't 3 to 5 years.

Razor thin margins don't help either, and the market for home grown PCs is not exactly booming. I've seen too many stores go out of business because they simply could not juggle the pricing pressures and the quick product transitions in the marketplace. And, those warranties that they promised to their customers? Defunct.
