>>Go to two or three of your local supermarkets and ask how the ol' veggie patties are moving.>>

Its a little dangerous to extrapolate nationwide market growth from the local market (i.e. just because sales are bad or good in Podunk, Alaska, doesn't imply that they are bad, or good, everywhere). That being said, over the last 4 years, I've seen the meatless product section in my local supermarkets dramatically expand (I live in South Florida). While some of this is due to stocking fees from manufacturers, these stores won't stock, and expand shelf space of, products that don't move.

I'll do some research on how these products are moving on a grocery chain basis and post when I find out more.

I asked the corporate sales offices for Winn Dixie & Publix (the dominant chains in Florida) about meatless found products sales statewide:

Winn Dixie said that sales were up significantly, but the initial base was small.

Publix said that company policy prohibited releasing such info. Interesting to note, Publix recently redid their frozen food sections so that meatless products are integrated with all the other products and no longer had a special area. The total shelf space remained constant though.

This info basically confirmed what the analyst projected (small base with significant growth). However, it only applies to Florida--can't confirm nationwide trends.
