Mark,

<<Do you think this report has been concocted to make the Maxtor IPO look better?>>

Nope, I know Jim Porter very well and that would not be his style. This is his regularly published annual report.

Best,
Stitch

>Do you think this report has been concocted to make the Maxtor IPO look better? :o)< Mark, I think you might be going for overkill.

A dose of skepticism is beneficial to your financial health, but don't become completely cynical. (Even Lawrence Kam has sweet spots, if you know where to look.)

PX has said before that these 'professional' estimates for hard disk drive unit and revenue growth are highly unreliable. That only makes sense, after seeing how widely the estimates from the hard drive companies themselves can flutuate from quarter to quarter.

But to assume that the 'professional' report is being slanted to improve Maxtor's potential IPO seems to be reaching a bit.

Best wishes,

Larry

PS: The tech sector still seems to be a dangerous place to put much money into. Just my opinion, which is, unfortunately, worth very little.

> - Capacity doesn't imply that sub $500 PC's will have small drives. We talk about these machines not needing more than 2 or 3 gig drives at most, but here they keep showing higher and higher capacity points taking the bulk of sales. Why don't they show a 2
gig drive, selling for say $15, going into a mass market Internet PC? I wonder which of these capacities they expect to see in Autos?

There is a floor for disk drives... and I don't believe that they can become as cheap as either floppy drives or CD-rom drives without some kind of new innovation... The configuration with a single platter is the lowest common denominator. The market price for recent designs in this arena tell a lot about what can be produced profitably... If it cannot be produced profitably then it is not sustainable, but simply a fire sale... and those must go away eventually.
