Thiokol Propulsion Awarded $10 Million U.S. Army Contract

June 19, 1998

------------------------------------------------------------------------

OGDEN, Utah, -- The U.S. Army has awarded Thiokol Propulsion, a division of Cordant Technologies Inc., a contract worth up to $10 million for the development and processing of energetic materials (explosives, gun propellants and pyrotechnics) over a three-year period. The program was awarded by the Army's Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) located at the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey.

One of the goals of the program is to demonstrate the rapid prototyping of new flexible manufacturing processes as part of the Army's Totally-Integrated Manufacturing Enterprise (TIME). Initially, the program will demonstrate proof-of-production for a new insensitive Army explosive developed jointly by Thiokol and ARDEC. A continuous production process will be developed on Thiokol's research-scale twin screw extruder, transferred to a pilot- scale extruder at ARDEC, and ultimately demonstrated on a production-scale extruder at Thiokol in Utah. A real-time data and video linkage between Thiokol and the Army will support this process technology development.
