Firm unveils broadcasting bank machines

A partnership unveils a new automated teller device that can carry television-style commercials.

ÿÿÿÿÿ A New York company and Bank of America Thursday unveiled a new system to carry broadcast commercials on monitors at automated teller machines at Palace Station.
ÿÿÿÿÿ SVC Network is offering advertisers another way to use commercials produced for television -- by playing them on ATMs in casinos.
ÿÿÿÿÿ The privately held company has installed six casino cash ATM kiosks at Palace Station and plans to provide them at other Station Casinos Inc. properties, said Steven Van Zandt, SVC co-president and a former member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.
ÿÿÿÿÿ SVC's goal is to operate the 21-inch advertising monitors at 400 casino locations in Nevada over the next six months. Advertising revenues will be shared with the casinos and Bank of America.
ÿÿÿÿÿ He said competitors offer advertising on their ATMs' 3 inch-by-5-inch transaction screens. But those advertisements are interrupted by transactions, he said. SVC runs its ads nonstop so they can be watched by people standing in line.
ÿÿÿÿÿ In addition, Wells Fargo & Co. and a subsidiary of Cash America International Inc. have announced a new kind of advanced ATM that uses technology that can recognize a patron cashing a check. A second screen will show promotional advertising for the casino, the companies said. Wells Fargo plans to start a pilot project at Nevada casinos in September.
ÿÿÿÿÿ The SVC system will be successful if SVC and Bank of America persuade major casinos around the country to accept the ATM advertising monitors. SVC's product also could be adapted for other ATM locations, including convenience stores, noncasino hotels and shopping malls.
ÿÿÿÿÿ Casinos are ideal locations, Van Zandt said, because people won't be annoyed by advertisement noise and because so many people pass through them.
ÿÿÿÿÿ The company counted 1.8 million transactions at 350 ATM locations in casinos over a month's period, he said.
ÿÿÿÿÿ The company will verify the number of people who use the ATMs for advertisers who buy 60, 30 and 15-second spots on the ATM ad terminals.
ÿÿÿÿÿ The initial advertisers include commercials for ABC-TV, Columbia Records, Miller beer, Nextel, Paramount Studios, Rayovac batteries, Seagram's Chivas Regal Scotch whisky and Sony Pictures, according to SVC. Later, the company will customize the programs and include promotional advertising from the host casinos.
ÿÿÿÿÿ The system uses digital satellite broadcast technology to transmit the commercials to ATM locations. Technicians will monitor the systems around the clock from offices in Dallas, Van Zandt said.
ÿÿÿÿÿ In addition, the company has the ability to change ads with a "moment's notice," he said.
