Hey gang, don't be too upset today. From Kaplan's page:

"Gold retouched its June 2 bottom of $287 per troy ounce. Because of the heavy net long commercial position in gold futures, as well as bullish traders' commitments for all of the white metals, the recent price drop will be entirely reversed as speculators eventually cover. That makes the current trading environment an ideal buying opportunity since prices of most gold mining shares are revisiting their lowest intraday levels since the second week of January 1998. The net long commercial position does not guarantee against further short-term declines, but it virtually guarantees that these declines will eventually be completely reversed and then some."

Apologies if everyone has seen this elsewhere. Haven't checked the other threads yet today. They are worth perusing, Bill, but I admit I'm enjoying the peace and quiet of this thread. It's like a Sunday morning in the park with a few friends, while the GPM thread is Saturday afternoon with all the kids and dogs and boom-boxes! Yes, there's lots of good info there, don't get me wrong, but it's nice to have a place where we cover much of the same ground more calmly. So thanks for starting these up!

Pete

BILL: GOLD DOWN ANOTHER $1.50 DESPITE YOUR REPORT THAT THE JAPANESE BOUGHT 400 TONS. EITHER THE MARKET DOES NOT BELIEVE IT OR THE US HAS PRESSURED SOME OTHER CB UNDER ITS CONTROL TO DUMP EVEN MORE THAN THE JAPANES HAVE BOUGHT.

Bill:

Assuming Japanese purchase of gold as alleged, what do you think the down-range effect on the Yen vis a vis the US dollar will be, and within what time frame?
