The computer networking industry -- for years the
fastest-growing high-tech business -- will expand at its slowest
rate ever in 1998 as prices for key types of equipment collapse, a
market research firm said on Wednesday. Cahners In-Stat Group now
expects industry sales to rise just 8.1% for the year to $29.1
billion from $26.9 billion in 1997. In the previous two years, the
industry's revenues grew by about 30% to 40%. The main culprit for
the networking industry's slowdown this year is free-falling
prices for Ethernet switches -- specialized computers that route
information between hundreds of personal computers within a
company. (Reuters 07:56 PM ET 06/10/98) For the full text story,

Gary, last month we had an exchange about STRM side. Another person had an interesting comment:

Now that ASND put a new wrinkle with their 500 and 550, how will this affect cisco's future plan?

Gary, on the Nortel conference call, an analyst asked what advantage the combined Nortel/Bay had over CSCO and LU.

After some deliberation, the response was "higher reliability", along with a reference to MCI's frame network being similar in size to AT&T's. So it looks like Nortel wants to compete with CSCO on reliability.
