NEW YORK -- Prudential Securities and Salomon
Smith Barney are in talks with South Korea's Anam
Semiconductor Inc. about a possible investment of $1
billion to $1.2 billion in the chip-assembly company.

TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. (J.TOS or 6502) plans take a stake
in a new Taiwanese company that will assemble 64-megabit
dynamic random access memory chips and other memory
devices, Toshiba said Tuesday.

The company, Walton Advanced Electronics Ltd. will be set up
July 1, with paid-in capital of $80 million. The investors will be
Walsin Advanced Electronics Ltd. and Winbond Electronics
Corp. with a 75% stake, Toshiba, with a 19.9% stake, and
Mitsui & Co. (MITSY or 8031), with a 5.1% share.
