Premiere chief executive Ferdinand Kayser said he expected the application review to go quickly and hoped to have 15 digital programmes approved for the Munich and Hamburg markets in time for the Christmas shopping season.

He said it would continue to use the d-box decoder system, developed by Kirch, as Premiere's technical platform.

Premiere said it currently has 1.65 million subscribers, 120,000 of whom receive its digital service.

Short Take: Hi-Val delays DVD-RAM upgrade kit

Hi-Val has delayed shipments of its DVD-RAM upgrade kit until August 15 due to production problems. The kits will begin shipping to corporate VARs (value added resellers) next week, and to retail stores, including CompUSA, on August 15. The kits, which comprise an external drive and software for recording and playing DVD discs, will start at $399.
