Mark in the article you posted..... "Our goal is to put the Internet on wings," said Bo Hedfors, president and CEO of the Boston-based U.S. division of Ericsson Instead of mobile phones, busy executives will carry "a personal communication box" that will allow them to hold video conference calls and surf the Internet,...." ------------------------------ IMO, the "communication box" will use Virtual Retinal Display Technology. See:mvis.com and there is an image of a cell phone with VRD capability. That is, "Virtual Retinal Display". A laser beam raster paints the computer display image directly onto the retina. Saab Ericsson is developing this same technology with Microvisions, Inc. of Seattle Washington for advanced jet fighter heads-up-displays. (MVIS) already has developed prototypes for Boeing, and the Army and "others" that are classified. Microvisions (MVIS) is in the process of developing cell phones with VRD capability so that you will be able to surf the net, check email, and pager info. MVIS has already won awards for this technology which was invented by the University of Washington, in Seattle. From,http://www.mvis.com/html/display.html is a description..... Hand-held two-dimensional displays VRD technology will be integrated into cellular phones and pagers, allowing users to tap into business networks or the Internet to view e-mail, web pages, faxes and files as if on full-size desktop monitor. This ability affords greater convenience and utility to users of these devices. I love this company but sold it to buy DGIV, they will target military contracts first, medical field, then consumer markets. The military has given small business grants to MVIS for their battlefield command and control, and helicopter program. Looking to the future, this technology will bring us closer to wearable computers that augment reality. As well as to assist individuals with "low vision." My imagination goes crazy with ideas for possible applications. As far as danger to the retina, it is not a problem. It's a great time to be alive.
