GIANTS SIGN FREE-AGENT CORNERBACK

(AP) - Cornerback Jeremy Lincoln, a seven-year NFL veteran and
unrestricted free agent, signed with the New York Giants on
Monday. Terms of the deal weren't released. Lincoln was the
Seattle Seahawks last season after playing with Chicago from 1992
to 1995 and St. Louis in 1996. He had 19 tackles in 12 games,
three as a starter, for the Seahawks. Lincoln was a third-round
draft choice out of Tennessee by the Bears in 1992. He spent his
first season on injured reserve after hurting his knee on the
second day of training camp. He returned to start seven games for
Chicago in 1993 before becoming a full-time starter the next two
seasons. He had one interception and 73 tackles in 16 games in
1995. He was waived by the Bears during training camp in 1996 and
signed as a free agent with the Rams, posting one interception
and 14 tackles in 13 games.

CORNELIUS BENNETT'S ACCUSER CHARGED WITH DRUG DEALING

(AP) - The woman who accused former Buffalo Bills linebacker
Cornelius Bennett of sexual assault was among 37 people charged
as part of a $1 million crack cocaine ring. The arrest could
affect any judgment the woman may receive from a pending $8
million lawsuit against Bennett, who served a 36-day jail term
after pleading guilty to the assault in a hotel room last year,
The Buffalo News reported. Police confirmed the woman, a
27-year-old former hairdresser, was among those indicted by a
federal grand jury Tuesday as part of a drug ring allegedly run
by Darwin "Kelly" McNeill. "This was one of the most well
established narcotics organizations in this community," U.S.
Attorney Denise O'Donnell said. Other suspects charged in the
case include a former state corrections officer and two men who
run car businesses in Buffalo.

The woman, who is suing Bennett, faces 16 felony drug counts. She
is charged with two counts of conspiracy to distribute more than
10 pounds of cocaine, and 14 counts of using a telephone to
arrange drug transactions. Although police said Bennett had a
relationship with the woman while she was allegedly taking part
in drug dealing, they said the investigation never turned up any
evidence that Bennett, who now plays for the Atlanta Falcons, was
involved. Bennett's lawyer, James Shaw, said the indictment would
affect the lawsuit. "It certainly hurts her credibility, in my
opinion," Shaw said. "She claims in her lawsuit that the (May
1997) incident ... left her totally traumatized, unable to work,
unable to function. And yet, according to the police, she was
well enough to go out and deal drugs." The woman's name was
withheld because she is a victim of a sex attack.

EAGLES SIGN FIRST-ROUND DRAFT PICK

(AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to terms with first-round
draft pick Tre Thomas, an offensive lineman from Florida State,
the team said Thursday night. Terms weren't disclosed. Thomas,
the 11th pick overall, is expected to sign a contract on Friday,
according to team spokesman Ron Howard. The Eagles hope the
6-foot-8, 325-pounder can step right in and prevent a repeat of
the 64 sacks the team's quarterbacks endured last season. Thomas
was consistently rated the top offensive lineman in the draft and
performed well against the best college pass-rushers he faced
last year.

BENGALS CONSIDERING O'DONNELL AS POSSIBLE BACKUP

(AP) - The Cincinnati Bengals are considering former New York
Jets quarterback Neil O'Donnell as a possible backup for starting
quarterback Jeff Blake. Bengals president and general manager
Mike Brown said Tuesday that Cincinnati has talked to O'Donnell's
agent, Leigh Steinberg. "We'll see where they want to take it
from here," Brown said. "There's no use getting involved in
something unless you know the other side is just as interested."
Steinberg confirmed Tuesday night that he has had some
preliminary discussions with the Bengals. "Yes, we have talked
with them and Neil does have some interest in Cincinnati," said
Steinberg. "But the last week was a tumultuous one, and he plans
to move ahead at a deliberate pace."

O'Donnell was released by the Jets last week after they signed
former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Vinny Testaverde. "Things
have moved so quickly," said Steinberg. "Neil has had calls from
a number of teams and is really in an analysis mode right now."
O'Donnell, a 6-foot-3, 228-pound graduate of Maryland, was taken
by Pittsburgh in the third round of the 1990 draft. He led the
Steelers to four straight playoff appearances, culminating with a
27-17 Super Bowl loss to Dallas after the 1995 season. He was
with the Jets the last two seasons, but he was sidelined for 10
games in 1996 with a separated shoulder and torn calf muscle and
lost his starting job to Glenn Foley last season.
