Boy, I just hate it when clients panic and get herded into standardizing on some hyped-up software or hardware of the hour, because it never seems to be what I standardized myself on by the time I get on the scene.

We have an tool we're writing. Our analysis of prototypes, one written in C and the other in Java (for Solaris) showed the Java prototype required four times the CPU time of the C prototype.

We decided to go ahead and do it in Java as a way of cultivating some Java experience but only because ultimately the program is bound by database accesses and not compute time. We also decided that this will be the only tool we write in Java until a native code compiler is available since we normally can't take the performance hit.
