Just an opinion,
The space between the goalie and the last line of defense has increased while the space between the mid-field and top of penalty box has decreased. This may be due to the new fad of 3-7 or 3-6-1 formations. Teams want to strip/intercept in the congested space and get more attackers into offense when they get possession.

Thus, defenders are getting caught by the short lob or occasional ground through pass and are running into their own goals. This own goal phenomena we're seeing may be due to bodies getting in the way of errant clearances.

What are your theories?

Welcome Gary, and thank you for your predictions, we will see how they turn out.

I have been very much impressed by Chile, I am almost tempted not only to agree with you in your assessment of Chile, but I think that if they play inspired, they may even reach the final.

I am concerned about Brazil, since if they play the way they did with Scotland, they won't get past the semi-final....

I was disappointed by Paraguay, I thought they would play much better, their goalie seems to be a little on the nutty side.... that could be a big liability.

Impressed by France, plus they have the home turf advantage....

Anyhow, Welcome again and give us some game predictions on a daily basis, it adds to the fun.

Z.

Gary,

Welcome to our little SI soccer fanimal family.

Yes, Salas has been impressive so far, can he keep it up? Golden Boot, I doubt it but then again look at my record!!

USA: If they can beat Yugoslavia they deserve to be in the second round. IMHO, I think they have a better chance in pulling off an upset in the opener against the Germans than beating the Serbs. Remember, the Serbs have been away for a loooong time and they are HUNGRY for redemption...Keller must have monstrous games in France because the defense is suspect. Yes Pope has a great future but is a little too young for France 98, maybe the next world cup. Samson has a chance of this being the greatest triumph in US soccer or the greatest tragedy. Again scoring goals is the key and avoiding big mistakes in defense. And of course Reyna playing.

Germany: Yep, never count out the Germans.

Brazil: My sentimental favorite to win it all. But I have picked France in our little SI prediction competition.
