Techie, do a little work. You can find lots of good data
there if you dig.

In case you still believe that the sub-1000 market will make
up 2/3 of the PC market by Q3, here is a reality check.

Sub-$1,000 PCs will account for 25 percent of global desktop PC unit shipments by 2001, expanding rapidly from their 1997 standing of 12 percent. Domestically, a commercial transition to lower price points will help the low-cost category maintain the growth momentum established over the past year, with sub-$1,000 unit shipments swelling to over a third of the market in 2001. Data includes branded desktop PC unit shipments for all segments and channels.
The key factors that led to the enthusiastic reception and rapid adoption of low cost desktops -- falling component prices, vendor price aggression, and rise of the Internet as the killer app of the late 1990s -- will continue to drive the market for sub-$1,000 systems. Increased pressure on component manufacturers to reduce cost and continued market share consolidation among the top PC vendors will accelerate the shift among commercial and consumer buyers alike over the next few years.
