Ramsey, you are more than welcome to come and look at the situation for yourself. My pessimism is borne of the economic reality I see.

The only cure for the Japanese banking sector that I can envision is a massive restructuring involving the participation of strong Western financial and credit institutions. That of course will also involve real reform of credit policies there, and worse, from their perspective, the opening up and deregulation of their credit markets. Until that happens, I see no hope whatsoever for saving Japan's banks, and therefore no way to stave off a full blown depression. That's where it's at, from my little corner of the world.

jess.
