But first, they will get smaller.

They will layoff 15,000 DEC employees and 2,000 Compaq employees right away.

I suspect this will not be the only round of layoffs.

Alpha has an installed base - at the "near" high end for servers. The market penetration of XEON-based systems must be watched carefully - to see if they complement or displace Alpha servers.

As for Merced - Intel is in a race with National to see if the Merced or the Cayenne/PCOAC/MXi/MIII is the latest out the door.
