Motorola As Competitor From idg.net ======== Intel and Motorola to enter unified messaging territory Chip rivals Intel and Motorola will announce next week that they intend to share an equity position in Nuance Communications, giving both companies a presence in the nascent market for unified messaging. Unified messaging using speech technology lets users have a single point of contact to send and receive e-mail, voice mail, and faxes via the telephone or a computer. (See "Magic and Fire for CTI in '98," March 23, page 53.) This week Intel, Motorola, Attractor Investment Management, and Goldman Sachs will announce a $15.6 million equity investment in Nuance, one of the companies selling a product with a voice interface for computer telephony integration (CTI). Nuance customers include Charles Schwab, United Parcel Service, Sears Roebuck, and American Express Travel. Nuance goes beyond customer service applications to all interfaces remotely via telephone and locally, according to CEO Ronald Croen. Intel will work with Nuance to ensure that its software is optimized for IA-32 and IA-64 processors, said an Intel representative. According to an industry source, however, Motorola's plans are more far reaching. Motorola will announce in June the creation of a new division called the Consumer Application Services Division (CASD) which will most likely enter the marketplace with a unified messaging product to rival Wildfire and General Magic's Portico, formerly known as Serengeti, which will be available on July 30. CASD will become a new corporate division within Motorola, the source said. Nuance Communications Inc., in Menlo Park, Calif., can be reached at nuance.com . ==== Sea Otter
