Etrade Group May Start Electronic Options Exchange New York, June 22 (Bloomberg) -- ETrade Group Inc., an online brokerage firm, is trying to become an electronic options exchange, according to industry insiders, Wall Street Letter reported. The move comes as electronic trading systems operated by foreign exchanges are taking market share from U.S. options exchanges. Palo Alto, California-based ETrade approached several members of the Pacific Stock Exchange about making arrangements for executing trades in listed and over-the-counter stocks, and then decided to build its own electronic options exchange because none of the options market makers could meet its needs, the newsletter reported. ETrade stock fell 21 percent since April 3 on concern that its profits will suffer from falling commissions and tougher competition among electronic brokerages.
