Aptiva sluggishness

I ran Netmedic for awhile. One of the functions is processor utilization. Processor (Pentium 90 or 100?)utilization was at 100 percent most of the time during periods of activity. With the extra RAM it did show a slight improvement but was still very high. It's hard to remember the details as I turned the machine into a family machine and do not use it except when the Compaq crashes.

I do believe the modem plays a role. I blamed Worldnet for difficulties connecting to their system. Sometimes it would take a dozen + tries for the modems to connect. My Compaq connects first time almost every time to the same ISP.

I ran Netmedic for a while on the Compaq (Pentium 200MMX). The CPU utilization meter was generally less than 50 percent.

My latest theory on my last crash.

The tower is adjacent to my swivel chair. I believe I may have nudged the tower causing a slight vibration as the tower moved a couple of inches over a wood floor. Could this cause a bad write to the registry during operations with a resultant freeze and loss of access to the hard disc?

Sean or Spots may have a better guess than I, but I bet your Aptiva sluggishness is due primarily to a poor modem. Might be worth a moment of fussing to slap a better one in there and see what difference it makes. The other machine liabilities you mention shouldn't make much difference RE the problems you site.

Always check your phoneline. In my experience most problems lie inhouse wiring or local loop wiring. Check multiple lines to the same target with multiple modems and most problems become evident...
Problems with cabling often change with weather conditions...
Your phone company can come out and test your line for a fee, free with some companies if your on their montly service plan.

Just re-read the original post

Ignore the above if your using the same line. Your aptiva probably has an Mvave modem. They had there fair share of compatibility problems with their modem. Since is DSP based modem you should be able to get the latest firmware from IBM. Try their TS. I'm guessing your other modem is internal or you would have already swapped them. I would definetly try another modem.

When you say slowness is it only subjective in the browser?? Are you getting less throughput on file transfers??? Generally 2.5-2.8K/s in Netscape FTP download is normal for a 26.4 to 28.8 connection....
