Taken collectively, these re-regulatory efforts are a logical but troublesome outgrowth of a political environment that led last year to the adoption of tougher children's television rules and the enactment of TV ratings/V-chip legislation. Moreover, these various politically charged initiatives could usher in a new era of "public interest requirements" for the U.S. broadcasting industry that, to date, has flourished based on its First Amendment right of commercial speech. natpe.org AND for those who want to do a lot of reading.
