Another thing that got Compaq and Intel ticked at each other was Intel's "Intel Inside" campaign. Compaq saw itself as a premium brand and hated being lumped with the Packard Bells and Gateways and even Dells of the world. The Intel Inside campaign weakened Compaq's ability to leverage its brand name. I'm sure the fact that Intel paid (still pays?) a good part of the ad expenses for the other box-makers, as long as their ads say the correct words, also ticked Compaq off (notice how a lot of box-makers' ads all sound similar and have a lot of emphasis on "Intel Inside," that's to get ad money from Intel). So Compaq hit back by going with AMD and Cyrix for some of their chips.
