There are at least 2 vendors producing Alpha-based workstations for under $2,000 - Alpha is not an expensive chip compared to PII let alone when put up against Merced. I think that CPQ might shift some of their 'non-intel' products to Alpha, and maybe do some higher end server products, but there is no business justification for CPQ to compete with Intel in any direct way.
CPQ is in the business of developing and selling computer products and services to resellers and end users. They will use whatever technology achieves that goal most successfully. Competing with Intel just does not make business sense for CPQ.
